To reach the monastery

The classic route from Monistrol to the monastery is about 4.15 km and takes around 1 h 30 min. It is the best option if you want to walk up and return by rack railway.

For an easy walk

The Monistrol walk and the Capella de l'Àngel route are good for a short outing, stretching your legs or walking with children used to gentle routes.

For harder mountain days

Montserrat has many longer and more technical trails. For a demanding route, plan ahead and check elevation gain, duration and weather.

Walk to Montserrat

The most classic and beautiful hike. This old pilgrims' path climbs steadily from Monistrol and offers good mountain views before reaching the monastery area. You can walk back down or return comfortably by rack railway.

Walk around Monistrol

3.4 km · Approx. 1 h · Easy

A short route to discover the area around the apartments. It passes the Capella de l'Àngel, the rack railway station and some of Monistrol's most charming streets. A good first-day option or a calm family walk.

1.8 km · Approx. 30 min · Easy

A simple walk close to the apartments. It reaches the Capella de l'Àngel, follows the mountain path to the rack railway bridge and returns to the village. Ideal for a short walk before or after visiting the monastery.

Which route should you choose?

With children

Start with the Monistrol walk or the Capella de l'Àngel route. They are shorter and easier to adapt to your pace.

Without a car

You can walk directly from the apartments and combine the climb or return with the rack railway depending on your energy.

For a full day

Walk up to the monastery, visit the basilica, take a short trail at the top and return by rack railway.

Tips before you walk

  • Bring water, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a light extra layer depending on the season.
  • In summer, avoid the hottest hours. Some parts of Montserrat trails are exposed to the sun.
  • Check the weather before setting off. Rain or fog can make some paths more delicate.
  • If you are walking with children, choose short routes and leave time for breaks.
