Montserrat monastery is one of Catalonia's essential visits: nature, spirituality, culture, views and mountain trails in one place.
Agulles de Montserrat is in Monistrol, at the foot of the mountain and about 800-850 metres from the rack railway. That makes it easy to plan the visit at your own pace: go up by mountain train, walk to the monastery, drive, cycle or combine the visit with the cable car.
Take the rack railway from Monistrol. The station is close to the apartments and the journey to the sanctuary area takes about 15 minutes.
Walk from Monistrol to the monastery. The classic route is about 4.15 km and takes around 1 h 30 min, with moderate difficulty.
Take the Montserrat cable car. It is a short, very visual experience with spectacular views during the ascent.
Take the road that climbs directly from Monistrol to the monastery (8.7 km). There is paid parking at the top, which can fill up on busy days.
The walk from Monistrol to the monastery is one of the most classic and beautiful routes in the area. Wear suitable shoes, carry water and keep the elevation gain in mind.
The rack railway station is about 850 metres from the apartments. You can walk through the village or drive to the station car park. It is one of the easiest ways to reach the sanctuary area.

You can also ride up to Montserrat by cable car, with stunning aerial views. The best option is to drive to the cable car car park.
Once at the top you can spend a full day visiting the basilica and abbey, listening to the Escolania choir when schedules allow, exploring the Museum of Montserrat, hiking nearby trails, taking the funiculars or walking toward the Santa Cova.
